In his preface to this volume the author says that "the moral virtues are the foundation and support of prosperity as they are the soul of greatness. They endure forever, and all the works of man which endure are built upon them. Without them there is neither strength, stability, nor substantial reality, but only epemeral dreams.'' And accordingly we find the "eight pillars of prosperity" treated of in this book to be-Energy, Economy, Integrity, System, Sympathy, Sincerity, Impartiality and Self-Reliance, upon which is built "The Temple of Prosperity," and to each of these virtues as a heading he devotes a chapter, each subdivided into "elements," as Industry, Efficiency, Honesty, Accuracy, Insight, Simplicity, Justice, Wisdom, Decision, etc.

A very good book which produces tangible action. This book will inspire the reader to make real changes in his or her life that will produce future success. I think that the author also invites the reader to live a life of adventure, faith, and meaning. I do strongly recommend this book and I am going to work at implementing meaningful changes in my life going forward.
This is not a self-help book written by a psychologist or counselor. This is philosophy in a direct way to life and living well. My description will not do this book any justice so I will simply encourage anyone who is thinking about buying and reading this book to do just that. This book helped change my life, helped me through a very deep depression, along with The Road Less Traveled and Anxious to Please. I have read this book several times through, there's so much insight within the pages.
There are a lot of things that I think are easily forgotten in the information age; things our father's fathers taught them as they went through the apprenticeship of their youth... watching and learning first hand what it is to be a man, and a generally productive member of society. These days our fathers are stuck at work all day, and we're unable to be the apprentice to their lives as they were to their father's lives.
This book brings a lot of things to light that seem to have been forgotten over the generations as we've been more and more drowned by our lives in general.
I think it's a great reminder of all the aspects we need to pay attention to if we want to hold our heads above water and be proud of the way we live.
This small gem is a true treasure! A highly spiritual book - surprising to most - but clearly explaining and outlining the true principles behind prosperity and success. In today's increasingly vulgar and coarse world, James Allen's work is a delightful antidote. One of the top five books I have read.
I was very shocked at the substance and powerful information contained in this book. Very practical and beautifully written. This book is a masterpiece, I will read it over and over again until it is engrained in my head. Repetition is the mother of all learning. Please do yourself a favor and buy this book right now, you will not regret it one bit.
2016 Update
I just re-read this book and still managed to gain growth and wisdom from it. This book is a masterpiece, I personally feel that the material in this book is even more powerful than James Allen's famous work As a Man Thinketh. The lessons in this book are deep, penetrating, full of virtue and strength. A very manly book to pass off to your offsprings indeed, I know my son will certainly get a copy.
I honestly have to read this book a few more times before all the juicy details are inculcated in my brain. It was the best book I've read so far in 2018. I 100% recommend to any and everyone. My only problem was getting past the fact that he was saying "men this and man that". I didn't want to read too much into it, but I do get annoyed when I read books that only have male nouns and pronouns. I just began to read it as "mankind" instead. That helped a little. Anyway, I did not let that affect how I digested the book. It was a great read.
Well articulated, gets to the heart of the issues that affect living prosperous lives.
This is not an '8 steps to prosperity' type book, rather a book that speaks to the essential four pillars, describing the characteristics and belief systems of those who hold to and, those who don't hold to each of the four pillars. It then explores a further four pillars that would significantly enhance the effectiveness of maintaining the essential four pillars.
You may need to look up a few words in your dictionary as some the the language used is not in common use today.
This book is now on my 'read at least once a year' list and this list is not very long. There are a number of profound realisations I encountered reading this book.
